Summer Commision Work

Some work I did in the summer, first is two portraits for the staff at "Arsenalet," in Viborg. The place me and many other animation related companies have their offices.

The pictures should look like old officer portraits as the Arsenal (and the whole Animation Workshop) resides in an old military compound.

The next illustration is one I did for and old client that wanted an illustration for her dad's round birthday. The illustration is based on his interests among which are the danish painter Otto Frello, and also contains his grandchildren.
On a personal level I also took inspiration from the air of Miyazaki's etheral "Laputa - The Castle in the Sky."
The illustration was the size of a poster.

Illustrations for "Snapsting."

In may I did 15 Illustrations for the "Snapsting Magazine," in Viborg, (Denmark) as the town lately have been starting to revive this yearly event.

"Snapsting," was a kind of festival in the historical town of Viborg happening from the 15th to the beginning of the 19th century. In the span of two weeks people from all classes from all over Denmark and beyond would come to trade and take part in the festivals many different kinds of entertainment.

I was to illustrate 15 different texts of things that have actually happened at the Snapsting throughout time or how the time periods have affected the festival.

1523 "Revolution at Viborg County Council."

1606 "Priest Murdered Nobleman after Weddingparty."

1649 "The Marriage Market."

1674 "Bloody Duel in Nytorvsgyde (Newsquare Alley)"

1691 "Noblelady in Free Fall"

1709 "Garters and Powdered Wigs."

1717 "An unfortunate Copenhagian."

1722 "The "Peblings" of the Cathedral School."

1738 "The King forbids Entertainers and Gambling."

1773 "Coffee clubs and Cultural Salons."

1779 "The Strangers."

1796 "Ripped of Everything."

1801 "Art and Waxworks"

1803 "Grand Graaaand Show"

1812 "The Tycoon of Nytorv (Newsquare)."

The Technique Used:

I had the fortune of working together with the art director Aguri Miyazaki in the winter and early spring, her almost perfect sense of color and color balance inspired me to reconsider my own technique (or lack of) when coloring in photoshop. As my weakness seemed to be a more unified theme when coloring I started doing the following:

Well actually, first I just draw the drawing in red and then the final lineart with a 4B pencil:

I then remove the red in photoshop:

Then the coloring. First I just apply a single color all over the picture - the general color I want. Then I loosely add light and shadows on top:
Then on top of the single color layer, but beneath the light and shadows layers I start adding flat colors:

Then atop all of the layers (except the line art) I put one layer that I use from now one to paint on. This is really the most creative and free process. I don't have to worry about the balance of colors instead I just make what I have now look good by painting the details, adjusting the colors (usually I try to saturate them more) and strengthen the light and shadows.

Personal Work 2013-14

So I wanted to start updating this blog.
First some personal pieces from the last two years.

This one is from the winter 2013/14

One from the summer 2013. I bought the later Hellboy comics with the wonderful art of Duncan Fegredo and became inspired.

And roleplaying drawings ofcourse... one from early 2013:

and one from summer 2012 with the whole team:

Finally, in spring 2013 me and some of the friends I'm playing Dungeons and Dragons made a blog to challenge eachother, based on our exploits in the Forgotten Realms - Ragejam!

Tuborg Summer Commercial and Exodus Storyboards

Hey hey!! I boarded the Tuborg Sommer Commercial!

The cameras was largely decided by the client, so the backgrounds and acting of the girl and butterflies is my primary contribution.

I hear its re-running on TV again this summer.

Next is a sample for the project I was an intern at:

This is an extract from the storyboard I did for the pilot episode of Exodus. In this scene the older brother Jacob have been promoted to a very high military rank. At the same time his little brother Ellias has failed his test to join the elite forces - despite that it seemed that he did an excellent test. Also, a few other images from the boards:

Some second year and summer stuff..

I've started at the 3rd year of the characther animation education now. It's alot of fun and work now that we're putting all our accumilated knowlegde of story, design and animation into working on bachelor projects in the form of 5 min short films. I'm at the short called "Under the Fold," which will be great!
Anyway, I wanted to post some of the things I did last year, but never got around to post.

This above is from an idea for a bachelor shortfilm I worked on before summer, but decided not to pitch due to the lenght of it. Instead I'm trying to write a short story out of the idea now.

The image above is from a pitch I did after summer, but which wasn't chosen. Oh well, I love the project I'm on now :)

...and some roleplay sketches ofcourse!

This last animation was the one I did as my second year exam. The task was to make a little story about two guys at a bar - one says something to the other, which results in a strong reaction from the other guy. I choose the reaction of paranoia.
This was the backstory I made for the shot:
Rob is working as a scientist at the local secret military base. Due to the pressure from work, he has begun to develop as strange phobic for the number two combined with red. All because of the operation called “red two,” a program to reveal dobbeltagents that have infiltrated their ranks.
After a long week of work, work that because of him have lead to the reveal of several dobbeltagents, he is at the local bar with his friend Dave, relieved.
But then Dave spots two hot women and whispers in Rob’s ear: “See those two in red?”
And Rob thinks, that “they” are there to get him.

Swordmaster the Hobbit

My roleplaying character, Belkar. Or, how he is dreaming of being, the little hobbit!
Tried to be a bit more saturated with the colours than I usually am. (But as I can see from my home computer, the saturation depends more on your screen than my choice of colors when I made the picture!)

Drawings!

Drawings, drawings, drawings.. They are all from first half of 2010, the two top ones below are illustrations for a book. The torsos below are from a short weekend class with Lawrence's old teacher Glenn Vilpu. His work can be seen here http://www.vilppustudio.com/ - its quite impressive. The rest is drawings from my sketchbook I thought might be fun or interesting to show.
